( History ) :

( Personality ) :
Zelos can be best defined as an excellent actor. On the surface, he appears as a self-absorbed ladies' man who couldn't care less for responsibility. He has openly stated that all he wants in life is the easiest path, the one that will lead him to victory and away from pain. He never seems to take things seriously; more often than not, he will be making jokes or end up being the butt of one. Women flock to him and it's not a secret that he's very experienced at dealing with them (even a man locked away in jail has heard of his endeavors!).

But, as was previously stated, Zelos is best described as an excellent actor. While he does wish for an easy way out, it's because he feels like it's the only way to deal with the burden of being the Chosen. In his world, being the Chosen meant being only second to the royal family; it meant having his every move closely monitored; it meant being treated as a title and not a person. The people of his world would sacrifice his life at a drop of a hat - if their world were to ever end up as the waning one in the battle for mana with its counterpart, then it would be his responsibility to journey and attempt to save them, save the people who have condemned him to this restrictive lifestyle.

There is nothing that Zelos hates more than his title as the Chosen. It was this title that forced his parents into an unhappy marriage, which led to the murder of his mother, which led to the stigma that stays with him always - that he should have never been born. In her dying breath, Zelos' mother said those words to Zelos, and since then, he has never stopped believing them. At several points in the game he almost sacrifices himself because he believes giving up his life is a worthy exchange - he'd give his life for his sister and for the sake of his companions. He doesn't think much of himself, calling himself a traitor and someone unworthy of trust.

At first, it seemes as if all Zelos cares about is himself. He's obsessed with running away from any source of pain or burden and tries his best to associate himself with people he considers victors. It seems as if his goal is to improve his life by escaping his title of Chosen somehow. Zelos is aware that his aim is cowardly and far from noble and generally doesn't think much of himself, but he's fed up with the idea of the Chosen and is convinced he's not well suited for it, anyway. He knows his sister would be a better Chosen than him, and would do anything to hand over the title to her (not to mention that his sister was on house arrest because of the incident revolving around his parents and he feels responsible).

Growing up, Zelos has been exposed to the luxurious life of nobility. However, he has never fallen for the glamor - he knows that each of the upperclass men are just faking their smiles. Even in an event that you can play in the game he expresses his distate for them for the same reason, showing that his opinion never changes as he has gotten older. Generally, he treats the higher class with disdain, including the scheming pope and the ignorant king.

For all of his proclaimed confidence and desire for an unhealthy lifestyle, he never really makes an effort to pursue his vices. He stays with the team and eventually befriends them; though he would never have thought of it himself, his companions do genuinely think he's a good person. It is his apparent loyalty to their cause that makes him appear likeable, despite his tendency to joke around. However, this is part of his manipulative nature - he knows that doing people favors helps earn their trust, and he's willing to make a few sacrifices to achieve his goal.

However, by the end of the game (if you choose to keep him in your party), Zelos decides that the group's goal to save the world is worth more than his goal to evade the title of the Chosen. He appears to betray the group in order to retrieve an item only someone with his connections to the other side could obtain. He is genuinely sorry for betraying the only people who seemed to care for him more than his title and is pleasantly surprised when they take him back without hesitating.

Zelos has a generally dirty sense of humor, was one of the smartest students when he was in school, and it talented at manipulating others. While he usually doesn't seem like it, as his lack of seriousness serves as a good mask, he's very observant. He chooses to appear to others as a womanizing jokester because he feels that that's how'd they see him anyway: as a joke. Over the course of the game, he learns that people can see past his title and that running away isn't the best solution, gradually paving a path to accepting himself.

( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :
Strengths: Zelos is a magic knight, to put it simply. He can handle a sword or a knife and is nimble in battle, appearing to dance across the battlefield. His spells include fire, lightning, earth, and wind spells, as well as healing spells. He doesn't deal heavy amounts of damage, but his agility helps make up for it.

Zelos is also good at schmoozing. He's observant and can read people with high degrees of success. In most social situations, he appears confident and knowledgeable; he's good at putting on difference faces and remembering details that he can exploit to manipulate others. He played three of the major parties in the game, tricking each of them into thinking that he was their double agent to be handled as they pleased.

Weaknesses: He doesn't have a lot of endurance and can't take too many hits before going down. Being a magic knight, the capacity for power is stretched between both magic and strength, so while he has the ability to use both, his relative strength and magic is not as effective compared to others in their party.

Zelos has one general idea of people: that they only care about certain things, such as intelligence, talents, and looks, things he considers degrees of usefulness. As such, he portrays himself as someone he deems is worthy of his title - he acts like a jokester and a playboy, someone who never takes things seriously, much to the chagrin of his party. No one can take him seriously, not even himself, and can make him a pain to be around. It doesn't help his relationship with others and it doesn't help him feel any better about himself, but he deems it fitting, so he doesn't seek to change.

( Other Important Facts ) :
As mentioned in the personality section, Zelos is the Chosen of Tethe'alla. This means that he has been carefully bred to have a certain mana signature, one that matched the mana signature of a 4000 year old "goddess". He was supposed to serve as a vessel to this woman's soul, which would explain why he appears so feminine. Fulfilling this role also means saving his world, Tethe'alla, if need be. However, his world was the one in power during the game, so he never experienced the journey.

Because of this status, Zelos has lived a life of luxury in a material sense. He lives in a giant mansion next door to the king. However, this also means he's been subject to testing and experiments due to possessing a special type of gem that unlocks his body's potential to fight. One of these experiements includes having ingested a special ore called "aionis", which allows him to use magic as a person with elven blood would.

( Sample ) :
Sitting in his room, Zelos can barely believe that what just happened really happened.

He is no longer the Chosen. There will never be a Chosen, not ever again. Will people finally see him as a person now?

The first thing he thinks of is the gaggle of girls that usually hangs around his door. Will they still be there? There's no attractive title over his head any longer, and while he does think he's at least mildly attractive, there can't be much else to lure them in. Relief washes over him as he collapses onto his back on his bed.

The second thing that pops in his head is, "what next?". Now that their journey is over and the matters of the church have been settled, Zelos feels strangely... unoccupied. He doesn't have to worry about what move to make next, who he should avoid pissing off and whose business he should be all over, what he owes to who, and just what it is people are hearing about him. It's a little boring, he'll admit, but for once, his mind feels calm.

The redhead rolls onto his side and stares at the wall in front of him. Now he's free to do whatever he wants, isn't he? But... what does he want? He could probably still waste time with the girls who still like him, for nostalgia's sake, but he's not sure if he's really up for another round of acting just yet. It should be time to take a break.

His face pulls into a scowl. God, since when was he so boring? Doubting his every motive like a child... Sheesh.

That really only leaves him with one option. Who better to bother with pointless crap than his best bud? Lloyd would definitely be able to distract him enough so he can take his mind off the foreign emptiness of his schedule. Why didn't he think of that earlier?

Once Zelos is downstairs, he makes sure that his rheaird is still ready to go. He exchanges a few parting words with Sebastian, letting him know that he (probably) won't be out for too long, but not to expect him back right away, before rushing out of his mansion. If there are girls around, he doesn't care to look; he's stayed still for long enough already, now that he's made up his mind, he might as well go without any second glances.
